bio... (as Karen M Bikowski)
I grew up in South Bend, In. where I graduated from Washington HS in 1979 and Holy Cross College in 1982. After spending 8 years with Sears (Mishawaka, IN) and 12 years with Montgomery Ward Electric Avenue (Rutland, VT) I returned to school studying education at Castleton State College where I graduated in 1999. I completed my internship at Rutland HS in Dec 1999 and taught the second semester at Fair Haven HS. I was hired at Green Mountain Union MS/HS as a 7th grade science teacher in June 1999. I live in Ludlow, VT with my husband, Kevin, and two dogs Sophie & Mia.

Middle School -- MS is not only a place, it is a time. It is a unique and challenging period of social, physical and academic growth and development. Our students need an advocate, a nurturing environment, learning strategies and experiences that lead them from concrete thoughts and actions to abstract thinking.
Science -- Studying science may be accomplished by using a combination of approaches, all with the common goal of understanding how science works.

GMUMS Science 7
Course Information
Welcome to Science 7 Room B201
In Science 7, the study of science includes the exploration of Life Science. This year-long course combines science and technology. Students will find themselves conducting field and laboratory investigations using scientific methods, critical-thinking, problem-solving, and using tools such as microscopes to explore the microscopic world. Students also use computers and information technology tools to support scientific investigations.
The life science concepts focus on living things. Students explore over 100 acres of school grounds collecting and analyzing data over the course of the year. The significance of human interaction with the environment is also analyzed. Students learn that cells are a functional unit of living things, which compose systems. A brief encounter with chemistry is covered in the Elements of Life. Basic genetic principles of inheritance are examined as well as examples of natural selection and adaptations (if time allows). Research of native plants and animals allows students to discover the use of taxonomy as well as an understanding of place.

Integrating subjects is an important concept for middle school students. The 7th grade team strives to provide this opportunity when the chance occurs. Research papers, news articles and several activities are directed by a team effort. Visit My Classes page for Science Fair information and more course information.
