Free Summer Lunch Program

posted Jun 1, 2017, 8:37 AM by Anna Sanford GM STA   [ updated Jun 1, 2017, 8:38 AM ]

NO COST SUMMER LUNCH ONCE AGAIN AVAILABLE:
GREEN MT. UNION HIGH SCHOOL DINING ROOM

Green Mt. High in Chester is once again participating in the very popular no cost Summer Lunch Program. A no cost lunch will be offered daily at the school in our dining room Monday through Friday all summer long. When school lets out there is a huge number of households that lose access to the school lunches they receive during the school year. Our Summer Programs help fill this gap by providing free meals to children who otherwise might go hungry. Plus, summer meals are sometime paired with enrichment activities such as our Summer Recreation Programs. We are in hopes of increasing the number of kids participating in the Summer Recreation Camps offered here in Chester knowing that there are Summer Meals available. Studies show that when children don’t get proper nutrition, they fall behind their peers academically when returning to school in the fall. The no cost lunch is for anyone 18 years old and younger. There is no registration or application process involved. Simply stop by the High School and have a healthy lunch. We will be serving lunch Monday through Friday in the dining room from 11-12. Menus will be available online and we can e-mail one to you if you like. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) funds the Summer Food Program and the State of Vermont administers the school meal service. All children 18 years and under can receive free lunch here at Green Mt. Union High.

Summer News 2017

We are looking at the end of yet another great school year. It has been a very busy year for us to say the least. This school year we are here until June 22nd. We would like to wish the Class of 2017 the best of luck and a great future. We will miss all of you coming down for lunch.

Our pre-school or Head Start program was very successful this school year. We fed two different classrooms breakfast and lunch daily with the exception of Friday’s. Although next year we will be feeding on Friday also, and an afternoon snack since the kids will be here all day. It is a wonderful program for the little ones. A couple of weeks ago they all came down and had their lunch here in the cafeteria. They all had a good time going through our serving line and having lunch in the big kid’s area.

We are still heavily involved in the Farm to School Program. As a matter of fact we just planted our School garden here on the grounds thanks to our program here. We will be harvesting items from the garden this summer for our summer meals programs. I am also planning on using all local ground beef next school year.

We continue for the third year to expand our summer meals program here at Green Mt. This summer as last we will be providing free lunches for area organizations and serving a free lunch daily right here in our cafeteria. This summer we are planning to prepare 300 free meals daily. For more information please call Jack Carroll at 802-952-9133.

Our June senior citizen lunch will be on June 7th. As always we offer our huge BBQ Buffet for the folks. We have a great turnout for this event. Our next luncheon will be in September.

Once again a huge congrats to our Jr. Iron Chef teams, two of our three teams coming home winners back in March. The coaches and teams are thinking about next year already.

If you have any questions please call or e-mail Jack Carroll.

Jr Iron Chef Winners!

posted Mar 22, 2017, 6:14 AM by anne.sarsfield@trsu.org

For the fifth year in a row Green Mt Union High participated in the Jr. Iron Chef Vermont competition in Essex, Vt.
Jr. Iron Chef is a statewide culinary competition that challenges teams of middle and high school students to create healthy, local dishes that inspire school meal programs
This year we entered three teams, a middle school and our two veteran high school teams.  We competed in the afternoon heat with 25 other schools from all over the state. Our middle school team called Turnip The Beet coached by Jack Carroll and newcomer Brooke Decker comprises of three members, first year competitors Maya and Aiden Farrar and veteran Gwen Kekic.  Our first High School team The Skillet Takes with veterans of this event is coached by Carrie King and Jana Bryan. Team members are Laurel King, Ange Wunderle, Rileigh Thomas, Magali Stowell-Aleman.  Our second High School team The Green Mt. Cheftains coached by Christine Anderson and Carol Neff.  This team also veterans of this event.  Members are Simone Martorano, Caitlin McCoy, Alexandria Pippin, and Chelsea Rose.
Teams are given 90 minutes to wow the expert judges.  Awards are given in each age group.  There are three awards all of equal importance.  The Crowd Pleaser  is award to the dish that best incorporates color, texture, and taste for a true crowd pleaser. The Lively Local  is awarded to the dish best highlighting Vermont foods.  The Mise en Place (“everything in its place”) is awarded to the team that shows exemplary teamwork, order, and professionalism.
The teams prepared three incredible recipes.  The middle school team prepared  Open Face Vermont Style Taco with Sweet Potato, Black Beans, and kale Pesto.  The Green Mt. Cheftains prepared  Fettuccine con Polpettini Zucchini.  Our other High School team prepared: Around the World with Stuffed Pretzels, three different and very tasty flavors of Pretzel.
We are proud and pleased to announce that for the third year in a row we have won.  Our middle school team Turnip The Beet brought home the Local Lively award as did our High School team The Skillet it Takes.  It was so exciting to hear Green Mt High called out once as a winner but to hear it twice for the second year in a row was amazing.  The coaches and teams were just incredible.  We have really made a name for Green Mt. High at Jr. Iron chef and throughout the entire State.  Thanks again to our coaches for their hard work with their teams and to the students for their devotion to this program.  We are already talking about next year.
Sincerely,
Jack Carroll
