Important Reminder about Lunch Forms!

posted Sep 20, 2017, 8:02 AM by Anna Sanford GM STA

If your child was a recipient of free or reduced lunch last year that does not mean he/she is an automatic beneficiary this year.  You MUST return the form to the main office by October 17th to avoid a change in status. If you do not return the form your child will be charged full pay starting on October 18th. Our school funding relies heavily on these forms - we sincerely appreciate your help and cooperation.

Food Service News - Fall 2017

posted Aug 21, 2017, 7:27 AM by Anna Sanford GM STA

I would like to welcome everyone back for another school year of healthy eating.  I would also like to welcome all new staff and students here for the first time.  My staff and I are looking forward to seeing everyone in the cafeteria for breakfast and lunch.  Our Sous Chef is Beth Connor; Beth has spent all summer with us working with the Summer Meals Programs.  Karla Hunsdon is also returning as our sandwich and cashier person.  Steve Pippin is back in the dish room doing his thing. Steve also was a huge part of our Summer Meals Program. I am very lucky to have such a great staff that enjoys their work and the kids.

We are once again as in past years involved in a great Farm to School Program.  We not only purchase from Windham Farm and Food, we also purchase from Black River Meats, and Reinhart Foods and local farmer’s market right here in Chester.  As budget allows I plan on purchasing all local beef this school year.  All three of the vendors I mentioned are great sources of local products from local farmers.  Items like Vermont Bread, Cabot cheese, Hood Milk, local ground beef.  We even purchase French bread here in town from Baba Louis Bakery to use for our garlic bread on spaghetti day.

Our award winning Jr. Iron Chef Vermont teams are waiting in the wings to begin another year in the kitchen preparing what will hopefully turn out to be a winning recipe.  Last year is a tough act to follow with two wins.  We once again this year will be entering three teams in the competition.

As we do every year I encourage all families to apply for free or reduced meal benefits.  Even if you feel you may not qualify please apply, you may be surprised.  You need to know if you qualify for free meals.  If you qualify benefits include breakfast and lunch.  Right now 1 in every 7 Vermont children are living in households that experience food insecurity.  School meals programs are the best tools we have to protect children in our communities from hunger and malnutrition.  The Title 1 funding your school receives is based on the number of students who are enrolled in our free and reduced program.  Title 1 funding pays for many of the academic programs all students use.

We offer a great lunch account system for your children.  Each child has an account and account number we have them punch in at lunch time.  Parents can also access their children’s account on line by going to mymealtime.com and set up a profile.  Payments can be made on line also.  We encourage you to maintain a positive balance in the account.  We do not allow any charging of meals.  For more information please contact me anytime at 802-952-9133 or jack.carroll@trsu.org.

Once again this year the first Wednesday of each month we have our senior citizen lunch at noon. Our first lunch will be Sept. 6.  Please join us for a great lunch and conversation with friends and the best part see the kids.

Sincerely,

Jack Carroll,  Food Services

Free Summer Lunch Program

posted Jun 1, 2017, 8:37 AM by Anna Sanford GM STA   [ updated Jun 1, 2017, 8:38 AM ]

NO COST SUMMER LUNCH ONCE AGAIN AVAILABLE:
GREEN MT. UNION HIGH SCHOOL DINING ROOM

Green Mt. High in Chester is once again participating in the very popular no cost Summer Lunch Program. A no cost lunch will be offered daily at the school in our dining room Monday through Friday all summer long. When school lets out there is a huge number of households that lose access to the school lunches they receive during the school year. Our Summer Programs help fill this gap by providing free meals to children who otherwise might go hungry. Plus, summer meals are sometime paired with enrichment activities such as our Summer Recreation Programs. We are in hopes of increasing the number of kids participating in the Summer Recreation Camps offered here in Chester knowing that there are Summer Meals available. Studies show that when children don’t get proper nutrition, they fall behind their peers academically when returning to school in the fall. The no cost lunch is for anyone 18 years old and younger. There is no registration or application process involved. Simply stop by the High School and have a healthy lunch. We will be serving lunch Monday through Friday in the dining room from 11-12. Menus will be available online and we can e-mail one to you if you like. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) funds the Summer Food Program and the State of Vermont administers the school meal service. All children 18 years and under can receive free lunch here at Green Mt. Union High.
